Why “I’m Not In the Mood” Is a Lie Fear Tells You

Ever said this to yourself?

“I’m just not in the mood to approach today.”
“I’ll wait until I feel more social.”
“It’s not the right vibe right now.”

It sounds reasonable. It sounds self-aware.

But in reality?

It’s fear, wearing a hoodie labeled “logic.”

Because the truth is, the more you wait for a good mood, the less often you take action.

Here’s how “I’m not in the mood” became one of my biggest excuses—and how I stopped letting it run my life.

🧠 The Real Problem With “Not in the Mood”

Mood is fleeting.
It’s shaped by:

  • Sleep
  • Blood sugar
  • Stress
  • Weather
  • News
  • A random thought from an hour ago

If you base your actions on your mood, you’re putting your goals in the hands of random noise.

You’ll rarely feel “perfect” to approach.
And if you wait until you do, you’ll take almost no action.

😬 What I Noticed When I Let Mood Control Me

I’d go out planning to approach… and then:

  • “Hmm, I feel a bit tired. Maybe I’ll just chill.”
  • “The energy’s not really right in here.”
  • “No one looks approachable.”
  • “I’m not really feeling it right now.”

Every excuse boiled down to the same core belief:

“If I don’t feel 100% right, I can’t act.”

But that’s backwards.

You don’t act because you feel great.
You feel great because you acted.

💡 The Mood-Follows-Action Principle

One of the most powerful things I ever learned was this:

You don’t need to feel motivated to move. You just need to move—and motivation follows.

It’s true in fitness. It’s true in business.
And it’s especially true in dating.

Some of my best conversations happened on days I almost didn’t talk to anyone.

But I pushed through the “blah” feeling—and something clicked.

🛠 How to Act Even When You’re Not Feeling It

Here’s how I stopped letting mood decide my momentum:

✅ 1. Create a Rule: “Mood Doesn’t Dictate Action”

This became my personal mantra:

“I act based on values, not feelings.”

It didn’t mean I had to crush it every time—just that I didn’t let hesitation decide for me.

🧍‍♂️ 2. Start With the Lowest Bar Possible

If I felt low-energy, I’d just:

  • Smile at a stranger
  • Ask someone for directions
  • Say hi to the barista

These micro-actions warmed me up.
And suddenly, I was in the mood.

⏱ 3. Use the 3-Second Rule (Yes, Again)

The less time you spend checking in with your mood, the more likely you are to act.

See someone → 1… 2… 3… Go.

Mood gets left behind. Movement takes over.

📓 4. Track Your Mood After Action

This blew my mind.

Every time I approached while “not in the mood,”
I’d journal afterward:

“How do I feel now?”

Answer: Energized. Proud. Clear.
That feedback helped rewire my belief about what action actually creates.

🎯 Stop Waiting to Feel Ready. Start Training to Lead.

You don’t need to be in the mood to lead a conversation.
You don’t need to feel social to take a chance.
You don’t need the stars to align.

You just need to go anyway.

Because every time you act when it’s hard, you strengthen your discipline.
You build trust in yourself.
And you start to realize: you’re way more capable than your mood lets on.
